Recently i joined Chthonic Syndicate, one of Second Life's military group. (meaning, a combat/military roll playing and action community in Second Life.) Learned a lot about the combat gaming community. This community are mostly teens or 20 something. You learn their argots, interests, social structure, etc. Some of interest:

  • PMS PMS Clan. A female group of combat oriented gamers.
  • RPG, refers to anti-tank rocket propelled grenade launcher. RPG-7

Xfire is a gamer tool for gamer community. e.g. post your machine spec, chat, scores, screenshots, videos, what games you play, hours played, etc.

TeamSpeak and Ventrilo are popular group voice chat programs. Group voice communication is critically important for real time, group action, games, such as gun fights. Efficient communication is one of the most important key in winning a war, just as in real life militaries.

There are a lot software for CPU gauge, typcially called system monitoring tool. That is, they graph your CPU usage, also usages of disk IO, network IO, memory usage, etc. However, rare do you see a GPU gauge. If you want that, get nvidia system monitor, at http://www.nvidia.com/object/system_monitor.html. (for NVIDIA graphics cards only.)

Also of interest, see the current tech of Headset.

I recommend:

  • “Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 Headset”. amazon (for wearing 1 hour.)
  • “Sennheiser PC151 Over The Head Headset” (with Noise Cancelling Mic and In-line Volume Control) amazon. For $48. For comfort (wearing few hours at a time), and high quality music.

Daylight saving time, a problematic hack. The benefit of a modern concept of time, is in its precision and universal agreement. Daylight Saving Time is a hack, originally for the benefit of saving electricity, and a very reasonable one. It was effective in the era of early 1990s or so. However, checking on Wikipedia, it is no longer so today. And, consider its other effects such as economics, health, etc, there is no conclusive evidence that it is good.
